when i was in madrid the last time i was in spain, we searched for La Casa Botín, a cafe/restaurant that Hemmingway wrote about in The Sun Also Rises.

today i found out that “botín” means “booty” as in pirate’s loot, en Español.

nightmares

it’s very strange but i’ve been having very vivid nightmares here in Spain. usually i don’t remember a whole lot of my dreams, but consistantly i have been remembering these bad ones. i’m jolted awake in the middle of the night and am unable to fall back asleep for fear of slipping right back into the same scene. i mean these are wake up crying dreams. these are on the level of rednecks trying to kill my mom and me dreams.

first dream was of a seven hour shooting rampage. i believe i talked about that one in a previous entry. i have never woken up so panicked in my life. luckilly it was still early at home, so i was able to call chase and divert my subconscious, but man, that one was horrible.

last week i had a dream that chase and i, along with a group of other random people, were kidnapped by a psychological serial killer along the lines of the guy from the Saw movies. He put us in this big metal room and then told us that we would be forced to wear rotting pig heads on our heads, like a mask. he demonstrated how it would work with me. the pig head was cut at the shoulder blades and then through the neck to the mouth was hollowed out, and somehow the mouth was wired open. these were freshly slaughtered pig heads, so it was all bloody and gross when he slid the pighead-mask on over my head. it was like one of those masks where your face is seen through the mouth. we then had to wear these as they rotted and decayed. it was pretty terrible.

then last night, i had another nightmare. this time i somehow got involved with the mob. actually it started off as somehow my parents, chase and i snuck into a led zeppelin concert and there, i spilled my drink, and this incident caused me to be put on a hit list. i spent the rest of the dream dodging bullets and trying to hide, while my mom ended up dying. this dream was pretty erratic and i don’t remember that much of it. i just remember that at the end, right before i woke up, a large italian man was holding a large gun to my head laughing and asking me if i really thought i could get away. then i woke up and realized that i was sweating profusely.

i don’t really understand what’s going on here with my overactive subconscious, but it’s really starting to freak me out. the pig head dream is just insanely graphic and really, fucked up. i mean the mob, shooting sprees, those are things you see on tv. but the fact that my sleeping mind devised such a fucked up torture as wearing pig heads… wow.

it’s an adventure to fall asleep.

i was in a place, tonight, where i looked up and saw a velvet sky sprinkled with stars. more stars than i have ever seen. more twinkling orbs of the past than you could dream of. the black sky almost looked charcoal-colored with the dense dusting of stars too far away to be fully distinguishable. i made wishes upon wishes, and then i watched as we drove into the city and they all faded away.

my heart aches.

haha, oh justin timberlake. you’re so silly. you’re white, right? and you’re a guy, too? okay, just checking.

anyway, i wonder how detrimental it is to my observation and assimilation into this new country when i constantly have my headphones on. but really, this is the only way that i can manage to get to school. i’m so quiet most of the time in my house and in my classes and such, that i couldn’t handle being silent some more. and when you have to walk over a mile to class, it really helps to have a beat to walk to. today is justin timberlake day, along with a few guilty pleasure songs from nelly furtado (who am i?) andrew, i wish that maneater would have come out sooner, so we could be together to sing to it in the car. or maybe we wouldn’t have wanted to at that time. but i miss singing in your car. whenever i hear ciara, or girlfight, or any of those silly songs, that’s all i can think about.

i wish i could have gone last night to the AFI concert that i bought chase tickets to. it probably would have been one of those situations that you could take a picture of and say, ”what’s wrong with this picture?” and it would be blatently obvious that it was me. AFI has colored some of my walks to and from school. Love Like Winter is great to walk to in the mornings. the footsteps at the beginning of the song set the pace.

the techno music has also been good at keeping me on my way. all of it. especially when i had to go on my treasure hunt for the obscure little book store called La Araña (the spider) for one of my classes. it was raining the entire time, and was probably 3 miles away from my house. it’s better just to zone sometimes. i guess i might be missing out on the things i probably would remember most–the sounds of Seville, but i think this is my way of coping with my culture shock right now.

today is going all right, i guess. i’m feeling a bit exhausted and generally…melancholic for whatever reason. i want to sleep a lot. classes yesterday went really well–i was actually very excited about my first day. my professor for the ”spanish you hear people speak in real life” class is absolutely amazing, has a lot of energy and is incredibly funny. the first word we learned was ‘coño’ which is a term for the female anatomy that is not exactly the most flattering, but the term is used to express a bad surprise. the second word we learned was ‘joder’ which translates to ‘fuck’ in english (however, this term doesn´t have the same intensity as it does in english). i knew from then that it would be a great class. the other class that i had then was spanish civ ii, which is basically western civ from a spanish perspective. i am totally excited for it, and have found that i am quite the nerd. i also had my first dance class last night, and that is proving to be the most difficult so far. i inherited doug’s dancing skills or lack thereof.

i had a horrible dream last night where these two teenage guys when on a 7 hour, cross-country shooting rampage, which i could not escape no matter where i was. it was incredibly graphic, and i used someone as a human shield and watched this guy completely blowup someone´s face. it didn´t seem to matter where i was or where i was hiding, and all the snipers in the US military couldn’t stop these guys (even though they were using a garbage truck for their mode of transportation). it was really pretty terrifying, and i woke up in a quiet house, in a foreign country, unable to go back to sleep, since every time i closed my eyes, i started dreaming it again. luckily it was about 2:30 in the morning here, which meant it was 8:30 at home, which meant i could skype chase and let his voice calm me down. it was really quite terrifying, and i don´t think i´m quite over it. perhaps that’s why i feel so gloomy today.

today i woke up at 7 am so that i could get ready for my first day of classes. even though i’m the queen of short showers, this 5 minute shower thing is leaving me feeling not so clean. it’s a combination of that and the fact that it is rediculously humid here, so my hair never really dries. anyway, i got ready and ate some breakfast of toast and Cola Cao (basically olvaltine). i had a minor heart attack this morning when i saw that josé manuel’s internet connection wasn’t active anymore, but luckily i could get onto the other one today.

i left a little later than i would have liked to. the walk is probably a little over a mile, and even though i was walking it briskly, i still had to run the last part of it to get to the center on time. it didn’t really matter, though, because once i received my schedule, i realized that i don’t have class until 9:40 every day. while this is nice, i have quite a few night classes, which really bums me out. i work much better when i have to go to class in the mornings. when your day starts at 9:50 and ends at 8:40, that’s a bit long. of course i have a long break in between my morning classes and my afternoon ones, but still… now i’m waiting for my first one to start. i need desperately to go to the post office today and get some stamps. in addition to being nervous about the classes, i hope to god that i can still receive a signal on my computer at home. that alone is keeping me sane.
